HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS: HEARINGS & SUBMISSIONS
VICTIM HEARINGS: CAPE TOWN - DURBAN - EAST LONDON - JOHANNESBURG
NB: Witnesses at TRC hearings were able to give testimony in their home
language. Translators and transcribers, who used three different word processing packages
to produce these transcriptions, worked in most of South Africa's 11 official languages
plus Polish. As a result, spelling errors (particularly of names) occur. There may also be
incorrect transcription or translation in places. There are also many instances where a
response was inaudible and a gap therefore appears in the transcription.
Differences in text formatting mean some of the documents contain embedded footers,
headers and incorrect page numbers. Finally, sometimes the testimonies are split into
several files and sometimes an entire hearing is lumped into a single file, which can be
several megabytes. File sizes are indicated in both kb and approximate number of pages.
