Deputy Minister John Jeffery, together with Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa officially launched the Human Rights Month at Freedom Park in Pretoria on 2 March 2023.
Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane conducted unannounced visits to courts in the Free State on 22-23 February 2023. The courts visited were Kroonstad and Ventersburg Magistrate Courts as well as the Office of the Family Advocate.
Corporate Services branch held a three-day Human Resource Planning (HRP) workshop at Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg from 22-24 February 2023.
Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane launched the Free State Provincial EXCO on 23 February 2023.

Senior managers of the Department, Advocate Doc Mashabane, Ms Connie Mametja and Mr Donald Makhani alongside other managers visited the Pretoria Magistrate court to check on the current state of the court following the DG’s visit last visit last year. The follow-up meeting took place 31 January 2023.
The Department in partnership with other stakeholders hosted a Learner Dialogue on constitutional education at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility on 3 February 2023. The dialogue was supported by the Deputy Director-General Legislative Development, Ms Kalayvani Pillay.
The Department officials, together with the Justice Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster officials organised a successful Back to School campaign at Bondzeni high school at Kildare, Bushbuckridge on Friday, 10 February 2023.

Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane conducted a courtesy court visit to Mdantsane and East London Magistrate Courts. The purpose of the visits was to engage officials and also promote the new values of the Department on 27 January 2023.

Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane, visited North West Provincial Office to introduce Provincial EXCO. He also addressed staff from Mafikeng Master’s Office and Molopo Magistrate’s Court, wishing them well in their festive season on 13 December 2022.
Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane addressed officials who obtained legal qualifications but working in different lines of duty. The aim was to encourage staff to undergo Practical Legal Training (PLT) with Justice College in order to get placement at relevant fields of work. The session was held at national office on 12 December 2022.
Corporate Services Deputy Director-General, Ms Conny Mametja hosted the branch management meeting reflecting on the unit’s performance of the year. The meeting also saw Ms Mametja awarding the best performing units at Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg on 9 December 2022.
The Office of the Chief Family held a two-day conference to discuss the ramifications and effects of Gender-Based Violence to children. The conference took place in Durban from 7-8 December 2022.
Justice College, in collaboration with the Office of Chief State Law Advisor hosted an online training on legislative drafting. The session was facilitated by Ms Tsitsi Chitsiku, Legislative Drafter from Falklands Islands from 5-7 December 2022. Participants were also given certificate of attendance by the Justice College.

Deputy Minister John Jeffery, together with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) led a march against the scourge of bullying at the Durban beachfront in KwaZulu-Natal on 3 December 2022.
Deputy Minister John Jeffery led a Community Imbizo to unpack the criminal justice system, also highlighting effects of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) as part of 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal on 2 December 2022.
The Department celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) at the Willows Resort on the 2 December 2022.
As part of commemorating 16 Days Campaign, Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane, alongside other stakeholders hosted a Community Imbizo at Nkomo Village in Giyani, Limpopo on 30 November 2022. The day focused on justice services and matters relating to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
Acting Deputy Director-General for Institutional Development, Mr Sello Chiloane, addressing members of the public during a community engagement at Christian Worship Church in Manini, Thohoyandou on 29 November 2022. The engagement focused on ways to fight Gender-Based Violence and Femicide in their communities.

Deputy Minister John Jeffery, together with the Judiciary and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), hosted Ugandan delegates who came to South Africa to learn more about the country’s criminal justice system, particularly sexual offences courts. The visit was part of assisting the Ugandan government to strengthen its own legal system. The meeting was held at Salu Building, Pretoria, on 28 November 2022.
The Department re-launched Orange Day which was initially launched in 2014 in order to unite nations to end Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). Orange Day is celebrated on the 25th of each month and the ‘colour orange’ symbolises a brighter future, free of violence. The relaunch and official opening during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence took place at National office, Momentum Building on 25 November 2022.
The Office of the Solicitor-General hosted a two-day stakeholder engagement workshop, looking at the challenges and possible solutions regarding the legal fraternity in the country. The event was held at Premier Hotel, Kempton Park on 23 - 24 November 2022.
Director General, Advocate Doc Mashabane attended the 5th Anglo American Sustainable Development Goals Accountability Dialogue held in Sandton, Johannesburg, on 23 November 2022.
The Department’s Chief Finance Officer, Ms Rofhiwa Singo, addressed staff in her branch at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria on 24 November 2022.
The Department, in partnership with United Nation on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), held a workshop to review the National Policy Framework Against Trafficking in Persons. The event was held at The Capital Hotel, Sandton on 21 - 23 November 2022.
The Integrated Justice System (IJS) held a gala dinner followed by a Retreat Seminar at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in Cape Town on 25 - 26 November 2022.

Former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke handed over an interim report to Minister Ronald Lamola about the Committee on the rationalisation of the areas under the jurisdiction and judicial establishment of the divisions of the high court of South Africa on 15 November 2022.
The Department honoured officials who dedicated more than 35 years serving the department diligently in their respective fields of work. The Long Service Awards took place at The Lakes Hotel and Conference Centre in Benoni on 15 November 2022.
The National Office Men’s Forum was relaunched at Kgoshi Mampuru Correctional Centre on 11 November 2022.
The Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane visited four courts in the Western Cape to assess the level of service delivery and also sign copies of the 25th anniversary of the Constitution on 11 November 2022.

Deputy Minister John Jeffery attended the National Schools Moot Court Competition finals held at the Constitutional Court on 09 October 2022. The grand finale saw finalists battle it out in front of the judges.

Deputy Minister John Jeffery hosted a community engagement at Tsineng Community Hall in Kuruman, Northern Cape on 30 September 2022. The session was to ensure adequate access to justice services in communities, this was in response to this year’s theme: “The year of the Community”.
The Office of Solicitor-General (OSG) hosted a successful two days stakeholder engagement meeting at Windmill Casino in Bloemfontein on 21-22 September 2022.
The Department held a financial awareness session, including presentations on anger and conflict management in the workplace. Health screening and exhibition were also conducted on 28 September 2022.
Officials at the national office celebrated the last day of Heritage Month in style. They showcased their traditional regalia celebrating and appreciating each other’s cultures.

He assessed infrastructure challenges that hinder members of the community from accessing justice services.

North West Office of the State Attorney conducted a multi-stakeholder management engagement in Protea Hotel, Mahikeng on 23 August 2022. Other relevant stakeholders were invited in the meeting with Solicitor-General, Mr Fhedzisani Pandelani present; issues regarding state litigation, milestones and challenges were discussed.
Justice women recently celebrated Women’s Month in style at Orion Safari Lodge in Rustenburg, North West. The celebration, held on 19 August 2022, saw ladies and few of their male counterpart clad in vintage clothing in celebration of the Women’s Month under the theme: ‘Women’s Socio-Economic Rights and Empowerment: building back better for women’s resilience’. Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane was also in attendance.

The South African Chapter: International Association of Women Judges and their male counterparts recently met to look at the overview of the National Strategic Plan on Gender-based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and the its three amended legislation. The discussions took place at UNISA with Chief Justice Raymond Zondo giving a keynote address on 06 August 2022.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, Minister Ronald Lamola, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya were among dignitaries who attended the officials opening of the 16th Conference of the South African Chapter: International Association of Women Judges at the Maslow Hotel Time Square in Menlyn Maine on 05 August 2022. The DG conducted a court staff meeting with Pretoria Magistrate’s Court officials where he engaged them on a number of issues directly affecting them and the operations on 05 August 2022.
DG Mashabane conducted unannounced visits at Heidelberg, Johannesburg Magistrate Courts and Pretoria Master’s Office respectively on 4 August 2022. He met court stakeholders and discussed issues relating to the courts and service delivery.
DG Mashabane recently visited the Mpumalanga High Court, Mbombela Magistrate’s Court and Masoi Branch Court respectively on 12 August 2022. This formed part of the DG’s visits to provinces to monitor service delivery and observe challenges in the court environment.

Deputy Minister John Jeffery hosted a student lecture in KwaZulu-Natal. The lecture was attended by students from various universities such as University of Zululand, Durban University of Technology, Mangosuthu Technology and Howard College at Riverside Hotel in Durban on 21 July 2022.
DG, Advocate Doc Mashabane embarked on an unannounced visit at Seshego Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on 12 July 2022.
Western Cape Regional Office, Office of Family Advocate, together with Justice Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster visited Saartjie Baartman Shelter for abused women and Children, Ilitha Lethu Centre and the Pride Shelter Trust in Cape town as part of Nelson Mandela Day celebration on 18 July 2022.
On 18 July 2022, the Mpumalanga Regional Office brought smiles to the children of Thabang Disability Centre at Clau-clau, in Nelspruit. The officials raised funds to buy groceries, cooked and cleaned for the children.
The Limpopo Region officials, together with the Department of Correctional Services spent thier 67 minutes where they painted and refurbished the dilapidated Mookgopong Magistrate’s Court on 18 July 2022.
The Department’s senior management held a Management Committee (MANCO) meeting at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre to discuss performance of the department in Pretoria on 20 July 2022.

Closing off the Youth Month, the Department invited youth from all the regions: they engaged in talks about their future within Justice. The event was held at Radisson Hotel, Kempton Park in Gauteng on 24 June 2022. The day saw engagements with speakers from external entities and the Department’s Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane.
On 20 June 2022, The Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane introduced the new North West Regional Head, Ms Jennifer Ngema, to the staff and stakeholders.
The National Register for Sex Offenders (NRSO) conducted a two-day workshop to decentralise the services to the regions as part of access to justice. The workshop took place at Momentum Building, National Offi ce on 27-28 June 2022.
KwaZulu-Natal Regional Offi ce hosted Children’s Rights dialogue at Ulundi Multipurpose Centre, which targeted the teenagers from surrounding areas on 24 May 2022.

Justice and Correctional Services Minister, Ronald Lamola travelled to Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape to hand over the remains of a Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) struggle heroes who were sentenced to death by the Apartheid government on 27 May 2022.
The Department hosted the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR), which reflected on the 20 years since its inception. In addition, the event assessed the progress made towards the implementation of South Africa’s National Action Plan (NAP) to Combat Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance. The two-day gathering was held in Kempton Park, Gauteng, on 23-24 May 2022.
As part of the Justice Learner Campaign, the Department hosted about 90 learners from various schools around Pretoria on 25 May 2022. The schools included Mamelodi High School, Ribanelaka Secondary School and Phelindaba High School from Atteridgeville where learners were exposed in various career opportunities in Justice.

On the same day (on 25 April) , DG made his way to Boschfontein Magistrate’s Court and ended the day at White River Magistrate’s Court.
The DG ended his tour at the Vosman Branch Court, a few kilometres from eMalahleni, where he met staff and management, also signed and handed over commemorative copies of the Constitution.
Later, the DG went to eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court where he engaged with staff and the judiciary.

On 7 April 2022, the Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane paid a visit to the Free State Regional Office.
On 6 April 2022, Director General, Advocate Doc Mashabane visited three courts in the Free State. The visit formed part of celebrating 25 years Anniversary of the Constitution as this year was declared as “Year of the Community”.
Director-General Advocate Doc Mashabane visited Kimberley Regional Office on 5 April 2022 to inform staff about the “Year of the Community” and also appreciate them for the work they do to help the community.
Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court was visited by the Director-General to appreciate staff for the work they do to help the community despite the challenges that they experience in the court. The visit took place on 5 April 2022.
