This year’ marks the 24TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSTITUTION COMING INTO EFFECT. The Constitution was signed into law by former President Nelson Mandela in Sharpeville on 10 December 1996 and came into operation on 4 February 1997. Today, South Africa joins the world in observing International Human Rights Day. The day commemorates the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global instrument that provides for the universal protection of fundamental human rights. We, as South Africans also remember the day well. On 10 December 1996, the first democratically elected President of the Republic of South Africa, Nelson Mandela signed the Constitution of our country into law at Sharpeville. This year, 2020, is also significant because one of the institutions that promote and protect our human rights – the South African Human Rights Commission – celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Yesterday marked the beginning of 16 Days of Activism for No Gender-Based Violence 2020. This year’s campaign will be be recognized under the theme: “Women’s Economic Justice for a non-violent and non-sexist South Africa”. It is well documented that South Africa (SA) has one of the highest rates of Gender-Based Violence in the world (5 times higher than the global average).

The National Action Plan to Combat Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (NAP) and the Indicative five-year Implementation Plan were approved by Cabinet on 27 February 2019. Subsequent to Cabinet approval being granted, the approved NAP was officially launched and released at a roundtable dialogue with key stakeholders including government departments on 25 March 2019.

• The Criminal and Related Matters Amendment Bill, 2020
• The Domestic Violence Amendment Bill, 2020
