Today, South Africa joins the world in observing International Human Rights Day. The day commemorates the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global instrument that provides for the universal protection of fundamental human rights. We, as South Africans also remember the day well. On 10 December 1996, the first democratically elected President of the Republic of South Africa, Nelson Mandela signed the Constitution of our country into law at Sharpeville. This year, 2020, is also significant because one of the institutions that promote and protect our human rights – the South African Human Rights Commission – celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Subsequent to Cabinet approval being granted, the approved NAP was officially launched and released at a roundtable dialogue with key stakeholders including government departments on 25 March 2019.
