Deputy Minister Jeffery to address the launch of training manuals on Prevention and Combating Trafficking in Persons

09 December 2020

South Africa plays an important role in the global fight against trafficking of persons (TIP).  TIP is a complex crime and government cannot fight it alone. Efforts to curb the crime and protect victims require the intervention of a multiplicity of stakeholders, including governmental departments and international agencies, non-governmental organisations and civil society. Training is a vital part of preventing and combating TIP.

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery, will deliver the keynote address at the launch of various training manuals relating to the prevention and combating of trafficking in persons in Pretoria on 11 December 2020.

The launch is a joint initiative by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD).

The UNODC Regional Office for Southern Africa has developed a Generic Training Manual to build capacity among key actors in various sectors dealing with the prevention of TIP as part of interventions to counter the scourge. The training manual is designed to complement sector-specific training programmes of various institutions. The IOM has developed the Trafficking in Persons Integrated Victim Assistance Standard Operations Procedures (SOP) to provide guidance for identifying suspected victims of trafficking and providing assistance to them.
