Deputy Minister Jeffery to officially launch a Small Claims Court in Richmond

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, John Jeffery, will officially launch a Small Claims Court at Richmond Magistrate’s Court, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday 25 July 2016. The event will also be attended by the MEC of Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Mxolisi Kaunda, District Mayor of uMgungundlovu District Municipality, Cllr Yusuf Bhamjee, as well as various stakeholders in the legal service.

The opening of the Small Claims Court is part of the department’s efforts to ensure accessibility and affordability of justice services. Small Claims Courts provide a platform to settle minor civil disputes that are less than R15 000.

Thus far, the department has established 371 Small Claims Courts nationally. Out of these, 51 Small Claims Courts were established in all 54 Magistrates’ Districts courts in KwaZulu-Natal.
