Deputy Minister Jeffery calls on communities to exercise their Constitutional Rights to better their lives

In his address at the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Constitution, Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery, MP called on the communities to use their constitutional rights to improve the quality of their lives. The Deputy Minister was interacting with Orange Farm community on the importance of the Constitution on Wednesday, 01 June 2016 at Orange Farm Multi-Purpose Centre, Gauteng province.

The dialogue was meant to promote awareness of constitutional rights and encourage communities to use their rights to enhance their livelihood.

“The awareness of the rights enshrined in the Constitution help strengthen the individual respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms, understanding, tolerance, respect for diversity and gender equality. As such it enables all persons to participate in a free and democratic society.” Jeffery said.

The Deputy Minister Jeffery further said that the protection and promotion of human rights cannot be left to government alone. He urged the communities to play their part and demonstrate active citizenry to strengthen the Constitution.

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in partnership with Foundation for Human Rights as well as civil society continue to have dialogues with various communities throughout the country to mark the 20th anniversary of the Constitution.
