As part of the activities that are aimed at supporting the anti-racism week, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development Eastern Cape Regional Office will conduct information sessions on equality courts in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape province.
Equality Courts are specialised courts designed to hear matters relating to unfair discrimination, hate speech and harassment. They were extended to the Magistrates Courts to bring access to justice to the marginalised vulnerable citizens to assert their rights.
The department is supported by the South African Human Rights Commission, Commission for Gender Equality and the Foundation for Human Rights, Nelson Mandela Foundation, Independent Newspapers, community based organisations amongst others.
The sessions will be followed by stakeholders pledging their commitment to deal with racism and contribute in building a non-racial society.
