THEME OF THE CONFERENCE

In 2024, South Africa celebrates 30 years of Constitutional Democracy and Human Rights. As we reflect on this significant milestone, Minister Ronald Lamola and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development convened the National Conference to assess the progress and chart a way forward in advancing human rights since 1994.

Held under the theme: “Three Decades of Respect for and Promotion of Human Rights”, the conference will gather key stakeholders and government Departments to:

  • Reflect on 30 Years of South Africa’s transformation agenda and efforts towards promoting democracy, development and human rights.
  • Consider the extent to which progressive realisation of human rights has over the years been promoted through economic policies and budgeting priorities.
  • Evaluate governance measures established to strengthen national structures, institutions and civil society which play a role in promoting and safeguarding human rights.
  • Unpack our national, regional and international actions and policies in strengthening the promotion and the protection of human rights in accordance with international human rights standards.

    President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged that while there is still progress to be made - government has made strides in the advancement of human rights. Ramaphosa says since the dawn of democracy, government has shown its commitment to democracy, the rule of law and to the protection of human rights. Speaking at the National Conference on 30 Years of Human Rights taking place in Ekurhuleni, the president outlined the pieces of legislation that have been passed that give effect to the Constitution.

    March is Human Rights month here in South Africa. To observe this milestone, local and international stakeholders will for the next three days convene here in Boksburg as part of the National Conference on Human Rights in South Africa.     The year 2024 coincides with several historic milestones in the nation’s fight for fundamental human rights and freedoms. Human Rights Month, is taking place under the theme: “Three Decades of Respect for and Promotion of Human Rights.” Human Rights Month is observed to remind South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy.

    “This year’s National Human Rights Day will be preceded by an International National Human Rights Conference, bringing together key stakeholders from across the globe as well as other government departments, to assess progress on the advancement of human rights since 1994.

    “The Conference will be hosted by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development from the 18th to 20th of March 2024 and is premised on the department’s core mandate to uphold and administer the Constitution, deepening constitutional democracy, and promoting the values of human dignity, equality and the advancement of human rights and freedoms,”
