PRESS STATEMENT: CONCLUSION OF PUBLIC HEARINGS OF COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO THE RAPID DEPRECIATION OF THE EXCHANGE RATE OF THE RAND AND RELATED MATTERS

This statement serves to inform members of the media and public that the Commission will conclude its public hearings on 24 May 2002.  The programme for the public hearings is as follows:

  • On 23 May 2002 Mr Bakarudin Bin Ishak of the Islamic Banking and Takaful Department, Bank Nagara, Malaysia will give evidence inter alia on the following:

    -           Currency market operation and exchange control from a Malaysian perspective;

    -           Management of the currency volatility which occurred during 1998 in Malaysia; and

    -           A perspective on the South African foreign exchange market and the movement of the Rand during 2001.

  • On 24 May 2002 evidence will be given on behalf of SARB and by Ms Maria Ramos, Director-General of the Department of Finance.
