PRESS STATEMENT: COMMENCEMENT OF PUBLIC HEARINGS OF THE COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO THE RAPID DEPRECIATION OF THE EXCHANGE RATE OF THE RAND AND RELATED MATTERS

This statement serves as notification of the commencement of public hearings in terms of section 4 of the Commissions Act, 1947 (Act No. 8 of 1947), of the Commission of Inquiry into the Rapid Depreciation of the Exchange Rate of the Rand and Related Matters (hereafter “the Commission”). 

The public hearings will commence on 4 March 2002 at 10:00 in Committee Room 4, Level 4 of the Sandton Convention Centre, cnr Maude and Fifth Street, Sandown, Sandton.  Parking with direct access to the Sandton Convention Centre is available in Alice Lane at a cost.

The members of the media and the public who wish to attend the hearings are requested to be seated by no later than 09:45.

The first two weeks, 4 to 15 March 2002, will be devoted to hearing the evidence of:

  • a number of experts in different disciplines;
  • the South African Reserve Bank;
  • the National Treasury;
  • the Banking Council of South Africa.
