Regional Office NC celebrates Child Protection Week
The Regional Office in the Northern Cape recently celebrated the Child Protection Week by educating learners at various schools in the Namakwa District in the province. This initiative took place from the 27 - 31 May 2013.
The objective for the outreaches was to raise awareness on Child Protection and their Rights. Mr David Manamela from the Department’s Legal Administration section educated the learners on the rights and responsibilities also stressing the importance that rights comes with responsibilities. The Child Justice Act, Sexual Offences Act, Maintenance, Domestic Violence were the main focus of the sessions held. An exhibition was also set up on the 31 May 2013 at the taxi rank in Kakamas to further promote child protection week.
Schools visited during this campaign were Port Nolloth High, Port Nolloth Primary, Gasie Maree Primary (Alexarnders Baai), Steinkopft High (Springbok). These schools are situated 700km – 1000km from the Regional Office. The targeted group was grade 7 – 9 learners.There was a strong participation by the learners at the various schools. The department also handed out promotional material, caps, bottles, rulers etc. and left pamphlets at the libraries of the schools. The principals and teachers were enthusiastic with our program and urged the department to have more programs like this. A few points were stressed by teaches and one teacher said “Don’t be strangers now, you are always welcome. Children in these areas need the information”
